The Relationship among Stress, Anger, and Problem Drinking in ex-prisoners in Korea
The goal of current study is to understand the developmental process of problem drinking among ex-prisoners in Korea by applying a theoretical framework for addiction syndrome theory. When prisoners in Korea are released, they face various challenges upon re-entry to society, which in turn elicits stress and anger. Extant research provided support for relations between stress, anger, and risk behaviors among ex-prisoners. The study sets stress as a psychosocial risk factor and anger as an underlying vulnerability which triggers problem drinking, and hypothesized that stress would affect problem drinking through anger. Participants were 311 ex-prisoners who are provided with accommodations and meals from Korea Rehabilitation Agency. Frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and Structural Equation Modelling analysis were utilized by using SPSS 22.0 and Amos 22.0, to test the model fit of the hypothesized model and estimate the direct and indirect effects of the variables of interest. The results indicated that stress did not affect problem drinking directly, but its effect was fully mediated by anger. Implications for alcohol interventions in correction services and future research on problem drinking are discussed.
